Maple & Bay

Privacy Policy

Maple & Bay collects only the information necessary to deliver the newsletter. We do not sell your data.

What We Collect

When you subscribe, we collect your email address. We do not collect your name, location, or any other personal information unless you volunteer it in a reply.

How We Use It

Your email address is used only to deliver the Maple & Bay newsletter. We do not use it for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than sending issues you signed up to receive.

Email Service Provider

Newsletter delivery is handled by Buttondown (buttondown.email), a US-based email service. Your email address is stored on Buttondown’s servers in accordance with their privacy policy. Buttondown is GDPR-compliant and does not sell subscriber data.

CASL Compliance

Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) requires express consent before sending commercial electronic messages. By subscribing, you give express consent to receive Maple & Bay issues. Every issue includes a one-click unsubscribe link. You can unsubscribe at any time and your address will be removed promptly.

Cookies & Analytics

This website uses GoatCounter for aggregate, privacy-respecting traffic measurement. GoatCounter does not set cookies, does not collect personal data, and does not track visitors across sites or sessions. Page views are counted in aggregate; IP addresses are processed transiently to derive a daily anonymous hash and are not stored. No advertising or behavioural-profiling vendors are loaded. Vercel’s hosting platform also records standard server logs (IP address, browser, pages visited), retained for a limited period for security and debugging purposes.

We log a single custom event when the subscribe form is submitted successfully, so we can tell which page or referral source led to a signup. The event records only which form variant was used, not your email address or any identifier.

Data Retention

Subscriber email addresses are retained as long as you remain subscribed. After unsubscribing, your address is removed from active lists. Residual copies in automated backups are purged on Buttondown’s standard schedule.

Your Rights

Under PIPEDA (and GDPR if applicable), you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information. To exercise any of these rights, reply to any newsletter issue or contact us directly.

Changes

If we materially change how we handle personal information, we will note it in a newsletter issue before the change takes effect.

Contact

Privacy questions can be directed to the editor by replying to any Maple & Bay issue.
